CO2 cost-effective capture, hydrogenation and conversion to fuel in Energy-Intensive Industries

In a future where carbon dioxide release to the atmosphere cannot be done freely, scientific and industrial progress has enabled us to imagine a solution in which carbon dioxide (CO2) becomes an increasingly important carbon resource; a world in which we utilise CO2 to create products. CO2 utilisation will create new opportunities for economic growth, greater innovation and boost Europe’s competitiveness, whilst supporting its transition to a circular, low-carbon economy. CO2 utilisation can also help to support Europe’s decarbonisation and resource efficiency agendas and provide a route to become less dependent on imports of non-renewable fossil fuels.

CO2 can be transformed into a wide range of products. Over 90% of organic chemicals are derived from fossil carbon, 5-10% of the global demand of crude oil is used in the manufacture of these products. In CO2 utilisation, CO2 is used as a carbon source replacing the carbon sourced from fossil fuels. Synthetic fuels can be produced that would directly replace liquid and gaseous fossil fuels.

Hydrocarbon Engineering, s.l. started its beginnings working in the development of a new hydrothermal process to obtain biomass from different carbon sources. This made it one of the four companies awarded by the VLC/START-UP 2016 program. These prizes for the promotion of innovative ecosystems are organized in Spain by the University of Valencia, the Fundació Parc Científic Universitat de València (FPCUV) and the CSIC (Spanish state R&D agency, with more than 130 prestigious research centers).
